Is Your Air Conditioning Unit Leaking Water? Here Are 3 Possible Reasons

Posted on: 30 November 2021

It is normal to be worried anytime you notice water inside your home. A leak is the first thing you will see before experiencing water damage, which can be costly to repair. Don't ignore leaks because even the smallest ones can damage your ceiling, walls, furniture, floors, and carpet. Therefore, you must take action immediately once you notice that your AC is leaking water into your home.

In such a case, first shut down the air conditioner and clean up the water because even minor leaks can cause major water damage. While an AC that leaks water can be alarming, an air conditioning repair expert can quickly fix the issue. Below are some reasons why your system is leaking water.

1. Blocked drain line

A blocked drain line is the most common reason for water leaking into your house from the air conditioning unit. Your unit is responsible for getting rid of the humidity in your internal air as part of the cooling method. So, over time, the condensate drain line can get blocked, leading to water backing up in the unit. If you fail to clean the pipe, the accumulated water will start leaking out of the pan and trickle on your floor. If this is the case, get an air conditioner system repair professional to remove the dust and debris in order to clear the drain line.

2. Low refrigerant

Most people think that an air conditioner uses up its refrigerant the same way a vehicle uses gas; however, this is just a myth. You don't have to refill the refrigerant in your AC regularly. But it can experience some glitches that result in a refrigerant leak. A refrigerant leak can be noted through a bubbling or hissing sound coming from your air conditioning system. Therefore, your unit will need quick air conditioning system repair because, with little refrigerant, the system will not cool your home efficiently. This then causes the evaporator coils to freeze, causing the AC to leak water.

3. Dirty air filter

An air filter that is clogged hinders the adequate flow of air over the evaporator coil. This makes the coils freeze, and when the ice covering the coils melts, it drips onto the drain pan and eventually on your floor. In such a case, have an air conditioner system repair specialist inspect your AC air filter and change it if necessary.

Knowing why your AC is leaking water will allow you to get the issue fixed in good time. However, you should get an air conditioner system repair professional to inspect and fix your unit.
