Investments That Reduce Heating Bills

Posted on: 29 May 2020

Heating bills are an expense that no homeowner can escape unless they're willing to freeze during winter. There are ways to reduce your home's heating costs, though. The following investments require an upfront payment, but they'll help reduce your heating bills month after month.

1. A Smart Thermostat

One of the best ways to save on heating costs is to adjust your thermostat's setting, and a smart thermostat makes it incredibly easy to adjust your thermostat no matter where you are. With a smart thermostat, you can always still manually adjust the settings at any time and it also has programmable settings if you like. What sets this type of thermostat apart, though, is the ability to adjust the temperature of your home remotely.

Don't know what time you'll be home or whether you'll come home a little earlier than normal? Just get your smartphone app and adjust the heat accordingly. You'll come home to a warm house, and you won't have to waste energy on heating the house for a long time before you're home.

2. Efficient Furnace Upgrades

If your home's current furnace is old and inefficient, one of the best heating-related investments you can make is upgrading to a new, fuel-efficient furnace. A furnace that has a high-efficiency rating will produce the same amount of heat as your current furnace while using much less fuel, and you'll save substantially as a result.

Should you decide to upgrade your furnace to a newer and more efficient model, talk with an HVAC technician about what type and size of furnace would best suit your house. They'll be able to explain the available options and make a specific recommendation.

3. Ceiling Fans

If your home doesn't already have ceiling fans, install one in each of the most-used rooms in your house. Ceiling fans are well-known for circulating air to cool down rooms during summer, but they can also help circulate air to keep rooms warm in the winter. Most ceiling fans have a reverse function that's specifically designed to help spread warmed air from the heating vents throughout the entire room.

4. Ductwork Cleaning Services

A duct cleaning is an inexpensive HVAC service that removes dust and debris from your furnace's ductwork. If it's been a long time since the ducts have been cleaned, paying for this service could greatly improve airflow through the ductwork and reduce how much your furnace needs to run to heat the home.

If you have questions about your home's heating, consider contacting local HVAC contractors.
